Custom applications

A Fieldmark® plan buys the standard product: notebooks you design yourself, hosting, the apps in the stores, support, and expert-services time. Some work does not fit that shape. If your organisation needs a field system of its own, we can build one on the platform.

You are probably in this territory if

  • You need capability Fieldmark does not have out of the box. Not a different arrangement of fields and forms, but a different thing for the software to do.
  • You need a white-label product, deployed to a particular specification. Your name on it, running on your infrastructure, and standing on its own rather than within somebody else’s product.
  • You need a dedicated product, not a subscription. The work is a programme or project with a budget, with stages and decision points, leading to a branded product.

If none of those describe you, a standard Fieldmark subscription is the better buy. Start at pricing.

How far from the standard product do you need to be

These are points on a range rather than separate things, and most work sits somewhere along it.

Custom branding is an option for Enterprise clients: your logo and your colours on the standard product, and possibly a custom-branded app, negotiated as part of your package. Everything underneath is Fieldmark as shipped. See Enterprise.

A themed deployment goes further. The platform runs under your own name, on infrastructure you control, configured to your own protocols, and independently of an ongoing Fieldmark subscription, but what runs is still the open-source platform rather than a fork.

A custom application is a development engagement: new capability and your own interface where you need one, on your own deployment and under your own name. Bolgiaten’s GroundSight sits at this end.

How an engagement runs

A custom application is a software development project: scoping, elaboration, development, and review with acceptance testing. We work in agile iterations.

Each stage is agreed separately and in writing, including the boundary between capability that flows back into the open-source platform and work that stays proprietary to you. See what the open-source platform guarantees you.

Work under way

Bolgiaten

Bolgiaten Limited is working with Electronic Field Notebooks Pty Ltd to build GroundSight, a product for engineering inspection, materials testing, and associated assurance activities.

GroundSight is built on FAIMS3, the same open-source platform behind Fieldmark, and Bolgiaten commissioned the development from our team.

Professional Recommendation – FAIMS and GroundSight™

I am very pleased to recommend FAIMS as an exceptionally capable and well-engineered open-source platform, providing a robust foundation for the structured capture, management and governance of complex field data. Bolgiaten has adopted the core FAIMS open-source product as the technology foundation upon which we have extensively customised and extended functionality for the implementation of GroundSight™, Bolgiaten’s unique digital product for the inspection and testing environment. This has enabled us to combine the proven flexibility, configurability and data-management strengths of FAIMS with specialist workflows, processes and functionality designed specifically around the operational requirements of engineering inspection, materials testing and associated assurance activities. The open architecture of FAIMS has been particularly valuable, allowing Bolgiaten to create a differentiated, scalable and future-ready solution without compromising the integrity of the underlying platform. Our experience has demonstrated FAIMS to be an excellent foundation for sophisticated, industry-specific digital products such as GroundSight™, and I would recommend it highly.

What the platform does

The Disaster Assessment Surveyor System (DASS) is a multi-hazard post-disaster impact assessment platform developed under the National Bushfire Intelligence Capability (NBIC), delivered by CSIRO. The platform was co-designed with representatives from state and territory agencies across Australia and is beginning to be adopted as the impact assessment tool of choice by multiple agencies. Assessors can record initial and detailed assessments offline, and a browser-based system manages users, teams, templates, surveys, access permissions, and data export. The ability to deeply customise survey templates enables users to fine-tune nationally consistent templates to meet their specific requirements.

Every engagement is scoped to its own programme.

Where to go next

  • Case studies for what people collect with Fieldmark, in their own words.
  • Open source and the FAIMS3 platform for the licence, the upstream code, and what happens to your system if we are not here.
  • Talk to us. A custom application starts with a conversation about pain points, problems, and requirements.
