Customisable mobile applications for collecting field data
Field notebooks that work when the signal stops.
FieldmarkĀ® takes the risk out of field data collection: offline-first electronic notebooks shaped to your data and protocol, operated and supported by a team that has built field research software since 2012, on an open-source platform that keeps your data yours.
Every evaluation starts with a person, not a payment form.
Works offline anywhere
Activate a notebook in the Fieldmark app and it downloads to the device, including any records already collected. After activation, the app can collect data with no internet connection. New records, photographs, and GPS points are written to the device and queued; sync resumes when a network is available.
Shaped to your protocol
Build the notebook your project actually needs. Forms and sections hold fields for text, numbers, dates and times, choices, photographs, GPS points, drawn points, lines, and polygons, and links between records. Any field can be marked Required, given a notes box, an uncertainty flag, or both, or set to appear conditionally, when an earlier response calls for it.
Your data, always yours
Export your way: a full archive with tabular data as CSV, photographs and attachments, GeoJSON, KML, and a metadata file, or a single form as CSV, or the photographs on their own. Exported media files automatically get a meaningful name based on record contents. The notebook definition itself downloads as JSON. The platform is open source under the Apache 2 licence, so the software your records depend on outlives any one company.
Where Fieldmark works
-
Field biology teaching
Macquarie University
Second-year Biology undergraduates collect ecological monitoring data following TERN protocols.
-
Mineral exploration
CSIRO
CSIRO deploys Fieldmark for remote sampling across multiple commodities and in collaboration with industry partners.
-
Engineering inspection
Bolgiaten
Bolgiaten commissioned GroundSight, a product for engineering inspection, materials testing, and associated assurance activities, built on the open-source platform behind Fieldmark.
-
Archaeology and heritage
The Artefact Post
A historical archaeology practice in Sydney tallies post-excavation assemblages in Fieldmark.
-
Bushfire and disaster response
Disaster Assessment Surveyor System (DASS)
The DASS, built as part of the National Bushfire Intelligence Capability within CSIRO, is a national, multi-hazard impact assessment platform. The DASS is built on the open-source platform behind Fieldmark.
-
University research infrastructure
Flinders University
Fieldmark is available to Flinders University researchers as an Enterprise service, paired with RSpace as a field-to-laboratory notebook platform.
-
Cold War heritage
Aarhus University
Historians and archaeologists recorded the condition, access, and location of Cold War and earlier civil defences across Aarhus municipality in the field in 2024. A new version of the notebook goes into testing in November 2026.
In their words
At Macquarie University Fieldmark supports authentic field-based learning across both university teaching and community outreach. Second-year undergraduate Biology students use Fieldmark to collect ecological monitoring data including plant biodiversity and aboveground plant biomass as proxy for carbon storage.
